Aspen Hotel – a green hotel
Aspen Hotel has been practising eco-friendly practices for many years. Each year as part of an annual assessment new initiatives are introduced to make the hotel more sustainable. Staff are encouraged to contribute ideas on how the hotel can reduce, re-use or recycle more and any other ‘green’ practices are encouraged.
Aspen House has a commitment to providing accommodation for environmentally-conscious travellers who care about their carbon footprint.
The hotel operates a recycling programme recycling paper, plastics and bottles and encourages guests to participate in the scheme by providing easy to locate recycling bins.
Hotel staff are also familiar with the internal recycling scheme. Items of clothing and other goods left by the guests are donated to local city missions as part of the hotel’s commitment to social responsibility.
Guests have a key-card device that lets guests use electrical items only when they are in the room. Where possible, all lights are eco-friendly bulbs.
In other locations bulbs are chosen for their minimal energy use. As with many hotels these days the hotel encourages re-use of towels and sheets. As a result of less electricity being used this means fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
Continuing its environmentally-friendly focus, Aspen Hotel provides guests with access to New Zealand’s first car share company, Cityhop, offering cars by the hour to guests. The benefit of this venture is that it provides guests with an alternative to car hire. The hotel is centrally located so it is easy for guests to walk to the public transport bus, train or ferry station or walk to Queen St, the Vector arena and so on.
The hotel also provides educational information for guests in the form of the NZ Eco-Wise Travel Guide.
The hotel also offers guests a chance to add a $1 to their stay to go towards a plant a tree programme to reduce greenhouse gases.
